Farewell to friendly face behind Warwick Red Cross counter
SINCE the first day the Warwick Red Cross store opened the doors, Kay Jones has been a familiar face behind the counter.
This year Mrs Jones celebrated her 70th birthday and decided it was time to step back from her role as team leader at the Red Cross retail store on Grafton St.
Mrs Jones has been a passionate volunteer worker with the Red Cross for 12 years but made the tough decision to step down so she could spend more time with her family.
The Yangan resident said it was the people who made the job worthwhile.
"I've met such wonderful people working here, and some friends for life," she said.
"The team all work hard to maintain a high level of quality and presentation.
"At the end of the day it's that satisfaction that makes it all wort it.
As the longest-serving staff member in Warwick, Mrs Jones said she didn't know what to expect when she started.
"When I started I had no experience working in retail, except for shopping myself - which I'm very good at," Mrs Jones said.
"I've since become a team leader which means now I'm mentoring other people on what to do.
Fellow volunteer Jan Mah held a farewell morning tea for Mrs Jones yesterday and said she would be sad to see Mrs Jones leave.
"I'm not happy to see her leave," she said.
"She's taught me everything I know and we'll all miss her very much."
