Fashion with difference
INSPIRED by her 15-year-old's passion for fashion, Karen Dwan of Allora has opened her own clothing store in Warwick.
She and her husband Greg have opened XS Boutique on Grafton St, a place for funky designer garments at a reasonable price.
Mrs Dwan's daughter's somewhat expensive taste and love for Supre and Myer saw her regularly dashing off to Toowoomba, and so what better excuse to open a shop here in the Rose City than a quest to save fuel, time and keep money local?
"There is a lot of mainstream stores here and great stuff for older people but I found I had to shop around to find clothes for young people," Mrs Dwan said.
Mrs Dwan said XS Boutique had a youthful feel with a designer flavour, inspired by her own favourite shop.
"I have a favourite store in South America where everything is hand-picked by the owners, it would all make you say 'wow', and it's such a wonderful experience shopping there; I want this to be just like that," she said.
"I don't want to be just another Just Jeans - not that that is a bad thing at all - but I want to be different.
"We are different from the local market and we will keep prices realistic and provide a good shopping experience."
From blinged-up jeans to sparkly tops and swanky dresses, Mrs Dwan said what was on the racks now was just the beginning.
"At the moment I have everything shipped over from the States, but there is an expo coming up in Sydney so I will go to that and see what retailers I can hook up with," she said.
"I hope to have new shipments in every two weeks."
The Dwans lived in Broome for a number of years before heading to Brisbane and later deciding the city life was not for them.
They then moved to a quieter life in Allora. XS Boutique currently operates out of a temporary shop (near Mitre 10), but Mr and Mrs Dwan hope to move into their permanent store next door by Monday.
