LEYBURN driver Doug Swan led his son Jason by three seconds in Queensland Super Sprints action at Morgan Park at the weekend.

"It is my first time this weekend in this car and I will catch him on lap times," Jason said.

The son might have a battle on his hands as Doug has been competing in super sprints for the past nine years.

Jason is in his second year of motor racing.

The pair has the same engine capacity in their cars but is in different classes; Doug competes in a 1985 Toyota MR2 and Jason, who lives in Warwick, in a 1985 Toyota Corolla.

Doug is in the sports car class and Jason in modified production but they can compare their best lap times of the weekend. Doug was clocked at one minute, 39 seconds, on the long circuit, only one second outside his best at Morgan Park Raceway.

In three weeks, Doug will have a meeting right at home, the annual Leyburn Sprints which he will contest in his Pontiac Firebird.

He has competed in 15 of the first 19 sprint meetings in various cars and will return in his Pontiac this year.

"I haven't raced the Pontiac at Leyburn for a few years since I crashed on the last corner of the last race," he said.

"I was going too fast and couldn't stop in time after I blew an oil line. Oil sprayed on my brakes and wheels and I hit some big hay bales."

Doug loves the chance to compete in the Leyburn Sprints but also loves the chance to live at Leyburn.

"I moved from Warwick to Leyburn for the quiet lifestyle," he said.

At the weekend, there were 93 drivers in the sprints weekend with some of the open wheeler drivers heading home early yesterday after morning showers made for a wet day of racing.
