Ferocious storm rips house apart

PRATTEN residents Mick Green and Anne Ritchie feared for their lives when Wednesday's supercell thunderstorm tore the roof off their home.

Anne said she was shocked by both the unbridled strength of the storm and the widespread devastation it left behind.

"It was unbelievable. At first we thought it was hail - heavy hail is what it sounded like - and then the "roar" came," she said.

"The next thing the roof came down on Mick's head and the cabinet fell down on the table and we scrambled under there and waited.

"When everything went quiet we looked at each other and said 'do you thing it's over?'."

The couple spent yesterday sifting through the rubble of what was until Wednesday night, their home.

Their former home is now uninhabitable and debris litters their 2.5ha property.

"It looks like a war zone - just like a bomb has gone off," Anne said.

"When I look around I feel sick in the stomach. It's devastating."

A caravan on the property was lifted into the air and thrown into a nearby tree, windows have been smashed, sheds ripped apart and fences destroyed.

"We had a lounge and kitchen room over there and it's gone - totally gone,"

During the storm, Anne and Mick's horses bolted but fortunately they were located taking shelter with a neighbour yesterday morning.

Neighbours Tracy Chalker and her daughter, Christine Osborne, thought themselves lucky following the freak storm.

Although almost every inch of their property is covered in tree branches, there is a hole in their house and a window has been smashed, Ms Chalker is grateful there is not worse damage.

"We are very lucky there isn't any structural damage - there is just veranda damage and we have lost our garden shed," she said.

Twelve-year-old Christine had a narrow escape from injury during the storm, when she decided to leave her room and take refuge with her mother.

"The window smashed over where I was sitting and there was glass everywhere - it would have smashed over my head if I stayed there," she said.

"It was frightening but I am just lucky that we're ok."
