Few overs before lunch again crucial for Warwick

CRICKET: A nine-year drought has been broken with Warwick beating Lockyer by 94 runs to win the Davis Shield at Slade Park today.

Andrew Ryan and Shaun O'Leary were part of the last winning Warwick Davis Shield side in 2009 and were again in the team on Sunday.

Batting first, Warwick made 6-197 and for the second week in succession decimated the Lockyer batting before lunch. Ben Heppell top scored with 41 in an innings where five batsmen passed 20.

Captain Dave Walker took four wickets as Lockyer was 5-25 off eight overs at lunch.

While Walker took four wickets and Lachlan Gross secured a run out for Warwick, Fergus Connolly only conceded seven runs in four overs at the other end to keep the pressure on.

O'Leary took wickets with two successive balls and three off five balls in his third over to finish with 3-15.

A feature of the Warwick effort in the field was a caught and bowled by Caleb King.

Warwick ran out two Lockyer batsman, such was the enthusiasm in the field of the boys from Warwick.

As Davis Shield winners, Warwick will now play a team from the South Burnett in the Falconer Shield final in late March.
