Field goal kickers 'have faced larger losses'

OAKEY player Chris Oliver is only third on the list of field goal kickers when the winning teams scores are taken into account.

Rugby League historian Mike Higgison has done some research for the Daily News and come up with a 2006 game in the Toowoomba Rugby League when Brothers beat Newtown 116-1 in A-grade as the highest he has record of with the opposition scoring one point.

The 2006 game in Toowoomba was played for 80 minutes whereas the Oakey A-grade game against Wattles at Clifton on Sunday was called off with the home side up 82-1 after 44 minutes.

Wests Mitchelton beat Deception Bay 88-1 in a second-division match in 2003.

Higgison said plenty of games over the years had been called off around halftime with 70 or 80 points on the board.

As far as high scores go, Higgison has found a 164-0 win by Gladstone Brothers in a Central Qld Challenge match against All Blacks as one of the biggest winning margins on record.

The reality is the players in the losing teams facing huge defeats deserve credit for playing on.

Many clubs have taken the easy options in many sports and forfeited.
