Fifty year celebration of Warwick Gymnastic Club history
GYMNASTICS: Fifty years of Warwick Gymnastic Club history will be celebrated at a dinner at the Redbacks clubhouse tomorrow.
The first gymnastics was under the Warwick Regional National Fitness Committee in a disused army building at Queens Park but that all changed when both the buildings and much of the equipment were washed away in the record flood on February 11, 1976.
Club president Coby Walker said the club trained in the old G.L. Henry Building in King St, then Glennie Hall in Albion St (now headspace) and later moved to its current site in Easey St.
"Land was gifted by Rosenthal Shire Council for $1 in 1990 and the club has not looked back," he said.
"The first building was erected in 1991 and was extended in 1996 to an overall length of 42m."
Plans will be released at the anniversary dinner for an additional building on the same site to accommodate an international-sized floor, which will be 20m by 20m."
Walker said members would pay tribute to all officials, coaches, gymnasts and parents down the years.
"We are hoping one of the founders Brian McVeigh will be there along with many past and current coaches." The club won state awards along with regional, state and national medals.
This year Dani Peel won the Condamine Sports Club Volunteer of the Year award and Leigh Murphy was a Daily News/Warwick Daily News Junior Sports Star of the Year. Many gymnasts have won monthly awards.
