Leslie Dam filled with happy campers
A WHOLE new community has emerged at Leslie Dam as campers flood to the popular camping, fishing and boating spot to celebrate the festive break with family and friends.
Tents and campervans are everywhere, while boats, jet skis and fishing rods are getting a workout on the water thanks to the brilliant blue skies and warm weather.
Visitors have travelled from near and far, with many campers coming from the Toowoomba region, some from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and quite a few locals taking advantage of what is right on their doorstep.
Washpool Camping Reserve caretaker Gail Lawson said she has been run off her feet.
"This is my third Christmas-New Year period as caretaker and I would have to say this is the biggest yet," she said.
"It's fantastic to see so many people getting together in this beautiful spot to share the festive season."
Campers have been constantly coming and going since before Christmas and despite a freak storm that blew across the dam last Friday morning and destroyed many campsites, the festive spirit is still alive and well with many rebuilding to stay on.
The normal 10.30pm curfew has been lifted until midnight tonight at the camping grounds to allow revellers to see in the new year.
The majority of groups are looking forward to firing up the barbecue, chilling with a few drinks and generally enjoying the relaxed atmosphere with good friends and family.
Mrs Lawson said everyone was usually well behaved and respectful to fellow campers and she didn't see this year being any different.
"I think everyone feels safe as the Warwick police are constantly patrolling the area," she said.
"Not that there is normally much for them to do but it is nice to know they are around."
Lake Leslie Tourist Park manager Adam Bennett was also pleased to see a large number of campers choose Leslie Dam as their holiday destination this year.
"We are close to being totally booked," he said.
"We have tried to promote the park as a family-orientated facility with all modern amenities including a pool and it's great to see so many enjoying it."
