Financial woes force council to scrap news advertising

SOUTHERN Downs Mayor Peter Blundell will use YouTube and the Internet to address ratepayers, with the council pulling its Council News page from local media companies.

The $48,000 cut in advertising is on top of almost $100,000 worth of cuts made in the 2015/16 budget.

CEO David Keenan said the council needed to regularly review where it was spending its money.

"The organisation needs to review where funds are being effectively expended on a regular basis, whether that is in the form of advertising or the delivery of services," he said.

The Council News page appeared fortnightly in the Warwick Daily News and other local media outlets such as the Southern Free Times.

Mr Keenan advised local media outlets of the decision earlier this week, stating the Council News would have been reduced in January anyway in the lead up to the election.

"Southern Downs Regional Council's Advertising Expenditure Policy indicates that certain activities must not be undertaken three months prior to the local government elections which are occurring in March 2016," he said.

"The Council News will be placed on the council website, as well as the Facebook site and the MY SDRC App.

"The mayor will also continue to provide a You Tube segment outlining what was discussed at the general council meeting."

Despite being briefed on the matter, councillors were not given the chance to make the final decision on the advertising cuts.

"The decision is an operational matter and not required to go to council," Mr Keenan said.

"Feedback was sought from councillors during the decision making process."
