HAVE you wondered what the fuss over the sale of Slade campus is all about?

Find out this week when the Slade Lives Again community group sets up shop in Rose City Shoppingworld.

Slade Lives Again vice-president Margaret McKinnon said committee members would be out in force with displays and videos to show people why they were fighting to keep the site community owned.

“We realise there are people who haven't been to the Slade site so we need to show them what it is,” she said.

“And we'll show them why we are committed to using this as a community precinct.

“We will be near the top of the travelator today, Tuesday and Wednesday all day,” she said.

“And then out the front of Bi-Lo for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.”

Mrs McKinnon said she had already seen a high level of support for the cause.

“I can only speak from the people that I meet, but those people are very committed to hanging onto the Slade site,” she said.

“People are concerned about high rates but they also understand that selling the site would not necessarily change those rates.

“People have given us financial support in the way of a $10 Slade membership.

“They are putting their hands in their pockets without any prompting at all.”

Mrs McKinnon said she believed the site could be run as a profitable business, but the council had put it in the too-hard basket.

“Council could retain ownership but allow a committed board to run it,” she said.

Another group touched down at Massie Aerodrome to take a look around the campus last Tuesday but was unable to put in a tender because the expression of interest period was over.

Two tenderers – the Slade Lives Again community group and Warwick Christian College – have until September 1 to submit their tenders.
