Fine for driving old car

A 55-YEAR-OLD Warwick man has escaped losing demerit points and his license despite being caught driving an unregistered and uninsured car with cancelled licence plates.

Police stopped Maurice John Ryan about 4.30pm on August 21 when he was driving along Albert St.

His registration had expired in March of last year.

Ryan pleaded guilty in the Warwick Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

He told the court his daughter had borrowed his car and he needed to get to work, which is 6km from his home.

Ryan jumped in the old car kept out the back, knowing it was uninsured, to drive to and from work.

Ryan said he thought he had paid the registration and it was determined there were problems with the cheque he sent.

Magistrate Graham Lee fined Ryan $440 for driving an unregistered vehicle and combined the other two charges for a fine of $300.

No action was taken against Ryan's licence.
