Fingers crossed for ‘unreliable’ runner
OAKEY trainer Peter Overell doesn't advise punters to put their last $5 on his horse, Steel To The Heel, at the Warwick Picnic Races tomorrow.
Steel To The Heel will be ridden by Chris Maund.
"The horse is old, cunning and unreliable. He could go out and lead all the way to win which is how he has had his last two wins."
While six years is not old for a horse, it is towards the top end of the optimum age for a racehorse.
In his last five starts, Steel To The Heel has won at Miles, ran fifth in Warwick, won at Kumbia, ran fifth in a field of 11 at Dalby and finished 10th in his last start in Warwick.
Steel To The Heel was bought as a yearling for $110,000 by North Queensland connections who started the horse four times before Overell bought the horse three years ago.
After a long spell, he has raced Steel To The Heel for two years.
"He won first for me at Warwick with Amy Taylor in the saddle," Overell said.
He described the Warwick Turf Club track as excellent.
"Warwick has a very good club and I like going there," he said.
Overell can't be in two places at once tomorrow and will be in Goondiwindi with another horse while his foreman, Kirsty Mason, will be in Warwick with Steel to the Heel.
Warwick trainers with horses in the meeting include Terry Catip, Garry Osborne, John Collins, Jack Brown, Michael Hemmings, Kellie Monckton, Norm Hilton and Garry Schwenke.
Schwenke will start Rip Rip Woodchip in the last, the Grove Juice Squeeze BenchMark 70 Handicap, at 4.06pm. The horse won the Warwick RSL Memorial Club Long Tan Cup last month.
Warwick Turf Club president Phil Grant said he was happy with nominations, especially in view of the large number of races in recent weeks.
