More than 1100 Warwick properties at very high fire danger
PARTS of Warwick are on the knife-edge as the region moves further into the fire season.
Sophisticated mapping showed the whole Toowoomba area had one of regional Queensland's highest bushfire danger ratings.
A special APN Newsdesk investigation found Warwick had 15 grassfires between August 1 and September 30 compared to Ipswich with 225, Rockhampton 184, Sunshine Coast 167 and Toowoomba 82.
With 2144 greater Toowoomba region properties in danger of bushfires, emergency services expect the season to be long and hot.
Of the properties at risk, 1105 are listed as having a very high danger rating and 1039 are considered at high risk.
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has conducted 50 burns over more than 5989ha in the greater south-east region.
Rural Fire Service Queensland Assistant Commissioner Neil Gallant said mixed weather patterns were taking their toll on Warwick.
He said property owners needed to take action before the hot weather took hold.
"Warwick is starting to dry out," Mr Gallant said.
"They haven't had the same storm rain. It is very patchy.
"One property owner could say it's very dry and 10km down the road they've had 50mm of rain because a storm has gone through.
"It is patchy and there are some areas where some storm rain has eased conditions - where that hasn't occurred it's probably above average potential there.
"Property owners ... need to get in now when there has been a little bit of rain around and conditions are still okay. Because once it really starts to dry out conditions will be very difficult to do controlled burns."
Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey said the Rural Fire Service Queensland used sophisticated mapping technology to identify properties that faced high fire dangers.
"We want all Queensland families to remain safe this bushfire season and our mapping technology has allowed us to directly target properties at risk," he said.
"They will be provided with a flier and fridge magnet with information on what different bushfire warnings mean and how they should prepare for a bushfire.
"If you receive this information in the mail you will know that the RFSQ has identified your property as being at risk of being impacted by bushfire."
National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said the QPWS had reduced fuel hazards over the past few months.
"Reducing fuel hazards is particularly important in managing the potential threat of fire to human life and property," he said.
"However, the burning program also has benefits for biodiversity and the environmental values of our parks and forests."
