Firebirds one step closer to securing spot in grand final
ALLORA player Laura Geitz has led the Mission Queensland Firebirds to a semi-final victory at Hamilton in New Zealand.
Two years ago, Geitz was on court captain for the second half of the season when the Firebirds won their first title after captain Lauren Nourse was injured.
This year, she has the chance to win her first title with the (c) definitely after her name.
On Sunday night, the Firebirds moved one step closer to securing a spot in the 2013 ANZ Championship Grand Final after taking down the reigning premiers, the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, 53-50, at Claudelands Arena.
The Firebirds led 13-8 at quarter-time, 25-24 at half-time and 41-36 at three-quarter time.
The Queensland-based team will now play the Melbourne Vixens in the preliminary final at Hisense Arena, Melbourne, on Sunday.
The Firebirds played a fantastic game, rattling their opponents from the very start of first quarter when it took the Magic five minutes to score their first goal. At no point in the game were they overtaken by the Magic, dominating their rivals from beginning to end.
Captain Laura Geitz said she was incredibly proud of how the team held their focus for the entire game: "Going into this match, we knew we had to pay attention to being composed and keeping our possession down to the very last minute, and we did that. We held on to the lead for the entire 60 minutes."
To date, the Firebirds have played 16 matches on Kiwi soil for a record of 12 wins and four losses. This is the best record of any Australian side on New Zealand soil.
The game at Waikato marked another career highlight for Firebirds shooter Romelda Aiken who surpassed her 3000th ANZ Championship goal, becoming the first player to reach this milestone.
