Firebirds Vs Magic is set to be a ripper of a clash
WARWICK netball fans will have the chance to watch one of the netball games of the year when the Mission Queensland Firebirds play the Kia Magic on Monday night at the Brisbane Convention and Entertainment Centre.
The game will be a sudden death preliminary final in the ANZ Championship.
The Firebirds lost their major semi final 52-47 to minor premiers, the Melbourne Vixens, in Melbourne on Monday night.
Warwick fans will have the chance to watch the keeper from Allora, Laura Geitz, and former Warwick West State School student Clare McMeniman combine in defence on Monday night.
The Queensland team has now set up yet another thrilling finals match against the Kia Magic, which defeated the NSW Swifts in the Minor Semi-Final in Sydney.
Coach Roselee Jencke said her team would make sure they are fired up and ready to hit the court on Monday night in front of a home crowd to secure a third Grand Final appearances in four years.
"We will go back and review this game and put it to bed and just focus on the Magic now, we know their game," Jencke said.
"The girls are all in really good spirits and we are confident we can put out a really good performance next week and step out on the court and play our game."
"The Vixens are on another level again and that is why they were Minor Premiers and hopefully we can get another crack at them in two weeks time," Jencke said.
In front of a 5000 strong Melbourne crowd, Firebirds shooting sensation Romelda Aiken clocked another stand out performance hitting yet another career milestone scoring 35 goals to take her tally over the 500 mark for a fourth season, but it wasn't enough to claim the win.
The Vixens came out hard and fast taking the lead in the first quarter with Jencke conceding nerves took over and played a part in her team having to play catch up netball for an entire match.
"We were prepared for what the Vixens were going to put on us with their tough defence, but we just need to settle those nerves a little bit quicker.
"We let them get to that lead in the first quarter and you can not play catch up with the Vixens, you need to make sure you stay in touch," Jencke said.
"In the first quarter we were tentative and we did not take our drives and in finals netball you need to be courageous and be confident."
A shaky first half with a number of costly turnovers from the Firebirds saw them go into the half time break trailing the Vixens by five, 27-22 but Jencke said one positive to take out of the match was her team never gave up.
"We fought all the way out to the end and kept in touch and got within two in the last quarter and that was great to see," Jencke said.
"We won some good ball but did not capitalize on those turnovers," Jencke said.
The Preliminary Final will be held Monday 16 June at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre with the time and ticket details to be announced shortly.
The Grand Final will be held in Melbourne Sunday June 22.
