Firefighters fear hot weather could restart blaze

FIREFIGHTERS are monitoring a section of Pikedale Rd to ensure a massive blaze does not spark up again.

The fire on the corner of Lunavale and Pikedale Rds started on Sunday night, taking fire crews nearly eight hours to extinguish.

Rural Fire Service Group Officer Alan Payne said the blaze reignited on Wednesday afternoon, and after five hours of battling, was under control after burning about 258 hectares of land.

"We had a response crew again from Maryvale and Gladfield, two units from Dalveen, one unit from The Glen, a private landholder unit, a council truck and the Warwick 91 Command Vehicle," he said.

The original fire was caused by a lightning strike, which also set off a blaze in Risdon on Sunday night.

"Over the next few days Pikedale Rd will be monitored fairly heavily," Mr Payne said.

"Saturday in particular has an extremely high fire danger and we certainly don't want it to get out again.

"We suspect a burning tree fell across the fire break.

"The tree showers sparks with the wind behind it and away she goes."

For the weekend, it is predicted to be 39 degrees today and tomorrow and 36 degrees for Sunday in Warwick.
