Firefly dancers best in theme at Warwick Rodeo Parade
JUDGES were blown away at the Move School of Dance and their float which best captured the theme of Fireflies and Western Skies for this year's street parade.
Move School of Dance manager Suzette Benz said her school thought of ways to represent different aspects of the theme.
"We put tutus on to represent the glowing bums of a firefly," she said.
"We made a big Akubra hat out of papier mache and chicken wire, which sat on top of the truck.
"There were papier mache cactuses and papier mache fireflies as well."
Suzette and dance student Joanne Butler came up with the float idea.
"Joanne and I spoke about it and we sort of threw around a few ideas," she said.
"We've been working on it for about three weeks now, doing bits and pieces on it each time.
"The kid's costumes were probably the easiest to put together."
The group made colouring in hand outs to give away to the community during the parade.
"We gave out firefly anatomy pictures to teach the kids about fireflies," she said.
"We made up about 300 of those, which worked out pretty well."
Suzette said the dance students were very proud to win.
"The kids just loved it, they had a great time," she said.
"We had nearly 50 children with us up on the float and dancing.
"It was absolutely fantastic.
"The girls worked out a few dances for the parade and are now working on routines for Halloween events."
The Move School of Dance provides classes for children aged three and up.
