Fires blaze across the region

THE fire season has well and truly taken off with emergency services going to three call-outs in one hour yesterday – including a grassfire covering more than 30 hectares on Connolly Dam Rd.

Thirteen crews from around the Southern Downs fought the blaze from around 11.50am and it took until about 5pm to contain it.

During the afternoon a grassfire started on the New England Highway 20km from Warwick.

Superintendent of South West Rural Operations Wayne Waltisbuhl said last night they still didn’t know how the fires started.

“They are still in the process of mopping up,” he said.
