First campdraft of the season

THE 2012 campdraft season will kick off with the Cunningham Campdraft at the Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve on January 21-22.

The Wheatvale State School, Cunningham Polocrosse Club and Cunningham Pony Club have combined to conduct this fund raiser.

It is an event affiliated with the Australian Campdraft Association, which ensures many riders travel long distances as they are keen to secure points for end-of-year awards.

There is never a problem filling spots in district campdrafts and organisers expect 900 nominations.

The juniors won't be left out, with a campdraft for riders from eight to 12 years.

A gold coin donation will enable competitors who arrive early to help raise funds for breast cancer research at a Friday night sausage sizzle at the grounds.

There is no shortage of room at the recreation reserve which was the venue for this year's Queensland Zone Polocrosse Championships.

One of the likely riders will be Michael Boyce, one of the best known competitors on the Darling Downs.

In the past six months, I have heard his name called at campdrafts at Karara, Warwick and Allora. He is always a force to be reckoned with.

Rodeo on

IT is only three weeks to the rodeo at the Yangan Hotel Motel on New Year's Eve.

From what I have been told, there is a lot of community support for the rodeo.

The bulls will be provided by Ross and Jan Hamilton from the Killarney area.

It might sometimes not be easy to get volunteers for New Year Eve Rodeos but the competitors and fans love a major event on the last night of the year.

Race day

TODAY is the social day of the year at Texas with the running of the Jeff Hannaford Texas Cup at the racecourse down on the flat near the river.

Flat land near a river is great for racing due to the grass growth but flooding can be a problem which was the case in January.

That will be the last thing on the minds of revellers at Texas today as all has been restored.

They have five races, then music at the course to 11pm and courtesy buses to and from town to the racecourse.

I am on holidays for the next three weeks so this column won't appear in that time.
