First for Shepherds in same Queensland polocrosse team

POLOCROSSE: The Shepherd brothers, Cameron and Stuart, will play together in the same Queensland team for the first time at the Barastoc Interstate Series at Morgan Park on April 21-23.

Both have played previously in the interstate series but not at the same time. Cameron won numerous player awards in last year's series.

Queensland had a titanic struggle with New South Wales in the interstate men's series last year.

Stuart said it was exciting for the brothers to play in the same team for Queensland.

"Down the years we have often played in the same section for the Warwick club but not so much in the last year. He mainly plays number one and I am a number two or three,” Stuart said.

"We combine together well when in the same section.

"Our aim is to both be in the Queensland men's team to play in the nationals in Perth in October, 2018. To make the team, we will need to perform well in April and throughout the 2017 season.”

Stuart has played in the Queensland men's team twice at the nationals but each time his older brother was not in the team.

Both are left-handers in a sport with fewer left-handers than sports like cricket, Stuart said.

"Some say it is an advantage to be a left-hander as players sometimes move up on the wrong side in defence.”

Stuart's daughter Bridget, 12, is in the juniors (under 16) team for the first time in a Barastoc Interstate Series.

Twelve players from Warwick club and three from Cunningham will play in the interstate series, which is expected to attract 24 teams.

Seventy teams are also set to play in the Shell Cup on a weekend when six Tests will be played between Australia and South Africa open teams.
