First honour board win

GOLF: Gail Watts has got a bit more serious about her golf in the past two years and now has one honour board win to prove it after winning the President's Foursomes with Judy Lester.

Watts first played golf 30 years ago and for the past three decades has predominately played in social events.

She had a little coaching 30 years ago and then her second go at being coached was one month ago under Sam Eaves at the Warwick Golf Club.

In fact, she believes the golf coaching has helped her putting at the Warwick Croquet Club.

"I had two holes in one at croquet two weeks ago which gives me three for the year," Watts said.

"It is far easier to hit a hole in one at croquet than golf."

Watts has played tennis in Warwick for 45 years and was a long-time fixture player and secretary off and on for 34 of those years.

Now after two hip replacements, she has retired from tennis and it is golf on a Wednesday, croquet on a Thursday and some charity days.

"I love sport and golf and croquet are two sports I can now play," she said.

"I was surprised to win the President's Foursome, my partner for the event Judy Lester plays off a handicap of 15.5 so my higher handicap helped.

"Judy did well with the long shots in the foursomes and I was happy with my shorter game.

"My goal is to get my golf handicap down to 30 in the next couple of years."

Watts and Lester, who both played tennis fixtures for many years, won the foursomes from Kerry Wharton and Janine Stewart with a score of 5-3.
