First Isa, now Warwick for Maher
WARWICK cowboy Michael Maher has no doubt a second successive win in the open saddle bronc ride at Mt Isa has boosted his confidence for the Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships on October 22-25.
Maher scored 74 to split second in the first round riding Ridiculous and then 80 in the final round on Bad Apple to win the aggregate by one point from Millmerran cowboy John McNamee.
"I was happy with the final draw as I have always won a cheque when I had ridden Bad Apple from the Kerry Hall string," Maher said.
Fellow Warwick rider Mark Collins won the first round at Mt Isa and split third in the aggregate. Lane Grayson made it two wins for Warwick with victory in second-division saddle bronc and Lachlan Miller split second in the aggregate.
In the run-up to Mt Isa, Maher was second in saddle bronc at Cloncurry and won the Ken Coleman Shootout so is in outstanding form approaching Warwick.
"We have a couple of weeks off but will be lining up some practice horses," he said.
"It would be a dream come true to win the APRA national title in Warwick, titles are what everyone works for."
Maher qualified first and Collins second in the top-15 for saddle bronc at the Australian championships.
The championship finalists in eight events will compete over four rounds in Warwick.
Second-division and junior events will also be on the rodeo program at the Warwick Showgrounds.
