First test for new surface

DAVE Drewery hasn't played AFL but that hasn't stopped him from being one of the driving forces behind the Redbacks push to construct a new playing facility at St Mark's Oval, which was used for the first time on Tuesday.

His interest is because son Jack and daughter Lauren play junior AFL for the Redbacks.

"We had 50 volunteers when we laid the turf and a number of regulars each week," Drewery said.

"There is still work to be done in the run-up to the season."

He is delighted that the turf, which was planted after the December and January floods, is growing well and reckons the Redbacks will have the league's best ground in three years. "Our field is a touch smaller than the MCG," he said.
