First-time players ‘add spice’ ahead of hotly contested game

CRICKET: Rain denied Warwick’s under 15 representative players the opportunity to take to the pitch in the opening match of the Country vs. City series two weeks ago.

The 12-man squad will instead take to Slade Park on Sunday in their first game against the Toowoomba based City team.

Returning Country coach Graham Bourke anticipates a competitive opening match from players from across the Darling Downs.

“I’m keen as mustard and the boys are keen to get out and play,” Bourke said.

“It’s going to be a heavily contested and hard game, but it’s a pretty good side that we’ve put out.

“They’re the best of the country players, so it should be good.”

Despite players not taking to the pitch in Dalby, Bourke has named a virtually unchanged squad for the home game, with only two dropping out due to unavailability.

“Iva Price from Roma comes into the squad for this game as Max Jeremenko won’t be able to play,” he said.

“Kade Martin is also not available for Sunday’s game so we’ve brought in Nick Millar from Lockyer.”

Warwick will be well represented for the home game, with first-time representative players Jack Ragh and Jesse Bohm praised by Bourke.

“Jack Ragh is a tall left arm fast swing bowler, and Jesse Bohm is a right arm fast swing bowler,” he said.

“They both add a bit of spice and speed to the bowling attack and they’ve both been in good form recently.”

While Bourke will be looking to his debutants in the bowling, three of his four top order batsmen will have already taken to the pitch on Saturday.

Playing the Condamine Cup, Tom Doherty (playing for Wheatvale) will verse Country teammates Hugh Inmon and Morgan Bourke (Colts players) in the A-grade semi-final.

“It’ll be good practice for the three of them to get themselves in good form,” Bourke said.

“It really lifts their standard of play.

“The three of them have been performing really well at senior level.”

The Darling Downs Country team will verse the City team this Sunday at Slade Park, Warwick. The team is: from Warwick captain Morgan Bourke, Tom Doherty, Hugh Inmon, Jack Ragh and Jesse Bohm; Josh Sipple, Isaac Phipps and Nick Millar from Lockyer; Matt Butters from Dalby; Mitch Hay from Taroom; Eli Schultz from St George; and 12th man Iva Price from Roma.
