First timer wins two major titles
FIRST time exhibitor at the Clifton Show Peter Bredhauer scooped the pool in the sheep judging on Friday.
The Cambooya fat lamb producer won champion lamb and reserve champion lamb in only his first time showing at Clifton.
Mr Bredhauer said he bought white suffolk rams from the Pride of the Downs Suffolk stud at Pittsworth, and his foundation black suffolk stud ewes from Joppich Farms at Leyburn.
"For the past seven or eight years, I've been putting the white suffolks over the black suffolks," he said.
"Eventually I hope to have a pure white herd," he said.
Running 150 ewes on his 150ha property, Mr Bredhauer brought two pens of three lambs and three single lambs to this year's show and took out the top prizes.
His 39kg champion lamb won the single lamb class under 44kg liveweight, and sold for $1.08/kg to Shelley's Meats of Warwick.
Shelley's also purchased Mr Bredhauer's reserve champion lamb, for $1.09/kg. The lamb weighed 61kg, and won the single lamb class, over 44kg liveweight.
Brett Shelley of Shelley's Meats, judged the competition and congratulated all competitors on the quality of the sheep on show.
"In the heavy class it was very close," Mr Shelley said.
"Any one of six or seven entries could have won."
Chief steward Bruce Passmore thanked all the exhibitors for supporting the show, although entries were slightly down on previous years.
"We had 82 sheep entered, which was down on last year's figure of more than 100, but the overall quality was very good," he said.
The most successful exhibitors in the sheep section were Clifton producers Stewart and Jill Free. The couple has supported the local show for many years.
Mrs Free said it was the second year they had won the points prize for most successful exhibitor.
"We produce dorper-cross lambs and we like to send in a few every year because, if people didn't, the show wouldn't happen," she said.
