Fisherman tries to catch small shark by hand
A FOOLHARDY fisherman was so desperate to catch a small shark after fighting to catch it for more than an hour that he raced into the water after it broke his line.
Onlookers were shocked to see the eager fisherman encourage his friend to go into the water to help secure his catch by grabbing the shark.
Buderim resident Miranda Wright was taking a walk with her children Cooper, 7, and Porscha, 6, when they came across the men who had been trying to reel in the shark for 45 minutes already.
The battle continued another 25 minutes while Mrs Wright looked on from the rock wall near the lighthouse.
"The fisherman had his friend in the water trying to grab the shark," Mrs Wright said.
"I said to my kids, 'I wouldn't be going in there. I would grab the rod and tell him to (grab it)'."
Would you try catch a small shark with your bare hands?
This poll ended on 22 May 2014.
No way, that's stupid.
Yes, you just have to be careful.
I wouldn't go near a shark even if it was dead.
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
She said the man was devastated when he lost the catch and his mate had not been able to grab it.
"I thought he was going to cry," she said.
"Then he went into the water to find it and even put his head under the water to look around.
"I was definitely telling my kids then it is not something you do: 'Do not ever pick up a shark by the tail or anything'."
Mrs Wright said it was a timely reminder that sharks were quite close to the shore where people swim.
"I was a bit surprised to see it so close, then it snapped off with all the people swimming there," she said.
