Council's financial position major talking point at meeting

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council's financial position will again be a major talking point when the council meets in Stanthorpe today.

It's expected that councillors will approve the council's 2014/15 annual report at the meeting.

The annual report will contain detailed financial information including councillor expenses and council income and expenditure.

The report's release comes as the Queensland Treasury Corporation prepares to undertake an annual credit review of the Southern Downs Regional Council in the coming months.

The review will assess the council's capacity to service its debts and the financial risks it's facing.

In a letter to be presented at a meeting of the council in Stanthorpe today, the QTC requests a presentation from the CEO and copies of the council's long-term financial forecast.

A range of other topics will be up for discussion at today's meeting, which is one of five between now and the election on March 19.

Councillors will consider a new development fee today. The fee will be charged to developers who apply for an extension of a building approval.

A report recommends a $145 per hour inspection fee be included in the council's fees and charges.

The fees are not forecast to raise much revenue, according to the report.

"These inspections are conducted very infrequently and therefore the charge does not raise significant amounts of revenue," it states.

Controversial topics including Grain X and funding for the Stanthorpe YMCA are also on the agenda.

The meeting begins at 9am, with the public welcome to sit in the gallery and watch.
