Five players impress SW selectors

FIVE Warwick and District Junior Rugby League players were chosen in South West Mustangs representative teams at Miles at the weekend.

Collegians under-13 hooker Angus Croft and U16 players Brandon Peckham and Brandon McIntosh (Goondiwindi), Joel Bradfield (Eastern Suburbs) and Dale McAntee (Wattles) will all wear Mustangs colours at the state championships in July.

Wattles juniors coach Glenn Brown will mentor the Mustangs U13 side while Shaun Henry (Wattles) is the U16 team manager. Warwick-based trainer Michael Coombes will also be with the U16 side.

The Queensland Rugby League South West Region Mustangs annual challenge and regional selection trials were hosted by the Miles Devils Junior Rugby League Club with teams from around south-west Queensland taking part.

In the U13 and U14 age groups, two teams from Toowoomba and sides representing Warwick and District and South West Districts contested the Peter Kuhl Trophy (U13) and Peter Cavanagh Trophy (U14) for region supremacy.

The Michael Paterson Memorial Trophy, for U16s, was contested by Warwick and District, Toowoomba and Roma and District Redbacks.

It was a clean sweep for Toowoomba teams which collected all the silverware.

In U13s, individual honours went to Mitchell prop Jack Kennedy (best and fairest) with Toowoomba Souths halfback Tom Gollan (best back) and Toowoomba Brothers lock Zane Willshire (best forward).

Toowoomba Brothers prop forward Jarred Tuite was best and fairest U14 player, best back was Highfields halfback Brodie Croft and best forward was Roma back rower Thomas Packer.

Toowoomba Valleys forward Mitchell Sargent was U16s best forward , Toowoomba Souths fullback Trent Baker was best back with Toowoomba Valleys centre Jarrod Dodd the best and fairest.

Possibles and probables teams played on Sunday morning.

The 2011 South West Mustangs teams will contest the QRL State Junior Championships at Ipswich in July.

Queensland Merit teams will be announced in U13 and U14 grades, with the U16 team selected to play against New South Wales Country.

Noted players who also wore Mustangs colours include Darren Lockyer, Carl Webb, Nathan Friend, Travis Burns, Chris Walker, Ben Lowe, Johnathan Thurston, Michael Luck and Andrew McCullough.
