Five schools set to compete in Tannymorel Sports

ATHLETICS: The Tannymorel Sports were first held in 1934 and the original program has seen little change in the past 83 years.

"The major change is from imperial to metric,” Tannymorel Sports Committee vice-president Marty Kerlin said.

The number of small schools in the area east of Warwick has gradually reduced over the years.

The sports were held for many years at the Tannymorel Sportsground but these grounds are now used for campdrafting.

The annual sports carnival now alternates between the schools in the area.

Yangan, Freestone, Maryvale, Murray Bridge and Tannymorel state school students will be involved in this year's carnival starting 9am Friday at Yangan State School.

"Due to the size of the school, Yangan competes as two houses, Sturt and Mitchell,” Kerlin said.

"There are some fourth-generation students competing as well as numerous third-generation students, which invokes a fair amount of passion in the carnival.

"The level of sportsmanship is quite high as the history of the carnival is highlighted to all students.

"Committee patron Lance Clarson competed in the Tannymorel Sports as a student and will be at Yangan on Friday to help present trophies.”

A comprehensive history on the sports carnival was published during one of the major anniversaries.

Brett Stewart is Tannymorel Sports Committee president with Rod Garland and Shane Stirling joint secretaries, Andrew Mapes treasurer and Marty Kerlin vice-president.

All welcome to come along.

The Yangan State School P and C will cater for the day.
