Fix means no more ark-building

NEXT time the rain buckets down on Maryvale, Ian and Joan Bean won't have to batten down the hatches as they have for years.

Instead, they can watch the run-off that formerly threatened their home gush into the creek, where it's supposed to go, after the Southern Downs Regional Council installed a culvert next to their Slade St property.

"(Water) used to hit the bottom of the hill and build back to flood us out," Mrs Bean said.

"This culvert should completely alleviate that flooding."

The Daily News ran a story on March 21 after hearing of the Beans' flooding woes.

Mr Bean said community members then banded together to get the culvert installed and through the help of councillors and (at the time) council candidates, they persuaded the engineering department to address the issue.

"Although I personally was critical of the initial response to do something permanent, I now would like to thank all concerned in accomplishing the excellent end result that is evident today," Mr Bean said.
