Flags fly for NAIDOC week

NAIDOC week began yesterday morning with a flag-raising ceremony at the Warwick Police station.

The ceremony saw a crowd of indigenous and non-indigenous people gather to recognise the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures within the local community.

Senior Sergeant Stewart Day, officer in charge of Warwick, opened the ceremony, speaking of a need to maintain a safe community for all people and support the indigenous community.

“We want to improve our partnership with indigenous people,” he said.

“This is about showing the spirit of cohesion and reconciliation”

Randall McIntosh spoke on behalf of the local indigenous community, praising the progress of reconciliation and encouraging everyone towards further efforts.

“To be standing where we are today is an achievement in itself,” he said.

He talked about how the ceremony was significant in recognising indigenous culture.

“This symbolises who we are, our history, our culture. We stand under these flags with strong respect to what we believe in.”

The ceremony concluded with the raising of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, which will fly throughout NAIDOC week.

Other events will be held at Centrelink and the town hall, and there will be a screening of Bran Nue Dae at the Warwick Twin Cinema on Thursday as well as an Indigenous Games carnival at Queens Park on Saturday.
