Flash flooding tipped, heavy rain is on radar

IT LOOKS like the rains may be here and up to 50mm can be expected in some areas, with most models now coming into agreement for a severe weather outbreak as of the weekend.

At this stage the models are forecasting with agreement on a weather event with showers, rain and storms lasting up to five days.

Some storms are likely to be severe, containing large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall which may lead to local flash flooding.

These should start to affect the Southern Downs and Granite Belt region by this weekend.

Today should see an upper trough move into NSW and combine with a surface trough that is sitting over Queensland.

This will intensify into an upper low pressure system during the weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday the system should be laying from the NW to SE interior of Queensland.

It will have isolated showers and likely severe storms with strong wind gusts, hail and some areas of heavy rain.

The Warwick region is likely to see more activity on Sunday as the storms move slowly east.

Monday should see conditions deteriorate further with very dangerous storms forecast and the potential of supercell activity.

Storms are expected to develop by early afternoon and continue throughout the afternoon and evening.

These storms may contain large hail, rotating winds and very heavy rain.

They will have the potential to cause damage and all precautions should be taken in the next day or two to prevent damage.

Here are some tips to be storm-ready:

Give your yard a clean-up and pick up and store garden furniture, trampolines or anything that may cause a hazard.

Give your gutters a clean and remove any branches near your house.

Tuesday is likely to see rain and storm activity all day and into the evening.

The storms may not be as severe with the supercell activity contracting to the north but heavy falls, hail and strong winds are still expected.

Wednesday is showing activity over the range and to the east but Warwick can still expect an isolated storm or two.

It should be showery most of the day and any storms that develop have the potential to be severe.
