Fledgling hair salon nominated for award

WITH the main worries of her peers being what to wear on a Saturday night, salon-owner Maddi Lane is successfully running a business at just 17 years of age.

Maddi owns Warwick hair salon Mad About Your Hair, which has been nominated for a Heritage Business Award after a mere seven weeks of being open.

Maddi said she always wanted to have her own business and the reality surpassed her expectations.

"I thought I would slowly build up the salon but in the first few weeks there has been an influx of people," she said.

"I'm still an apprentice and the opportunity just popped up."

She said that the community had really come forward to support her salon at Westside Shopping Centre.

"No other salons are on this side of town and I think people are excited to see something different," she said. "It is a good opportunity to start ... there is something in this shopping centre that has potential."

With the support of her employee Laurel Hughes, who has worked for 20 years as a hairdresser, Maddi said they make business decisions together.

"It's a great salon to work in," Laurel said.

"Maddi's colours come out as good as anyone I've ever worked with.

"What I've enjoyed so much about working with Maddi is that we are bouncing ideas off each other and creating amazing results that we put on Facebook."

Maddi, who turns 18 soon, said she enjoyed being a business owner at a young age.

"Everyone's been really supportive," she said.

"It's like 'good on you for having a go' ".

With Mad About Your Hair a finalist in the business awards, Maddi said she looked forward to the results on Saturday night.

"We are excited but didn't expect it," she said.

Maddi is also preparing for a hairdressing competition in two weeks, where she will travel to Toowoomba for the World Skills Darling Downs heats.

If she makes it through the competition, she will go to the state finals, Australian finals, then maybe overseas.

"It's a great experience," she said.

"I'll see how it all goes."

Mad About Your Hair has its own colour range and offer a complementary espresso coffee with their services.
