Flu shot softens the blow
THIS time of year, it is wise to whip out the hand sanitiser and dose up on vitamin C in an attempt to dodge the dreaded flu.
But sometimes, no matter how many Spirulina tablets you take, or honey teas you consume, the virus still seems to creep its way into your household.
One Warwick pharmacist said the way to soften the blow this season was to get the flu shot.
"One thing people don't usually realise with the flu injection is that even if you get the flu, it won't be nearly as bad and it won't last as long," he said.
"It is very popular - I even get it myself every year."
The pharmacist encouraged those with a compromised immune system or people over 65 years old to consult their doctor to see if they were eligible for a free injection.
"It's better be safe than sorry, and vaccines are a proven way to stop the spread of disease," the pharmacist said.
He said those with the flu should avoid going to work and spreading the virus, and should rest for a few days.
"If you're sick, don't turn up to work - that's how it spreads. It's pretty common sense; there is no magic in it," the pharmacist said.
"People need to wash their hands, have good hygiene, cough in a handkerchief, and these days you can carry around portable sterilisation washers which are great."
He also recommended those exposed to the virus should wear a face mask to prevent catching, or spreading, the flu.
The Warwick Discount Drug Store will be holding a flu clinic on April 23 for adults to get their flu shots for just $22, or as arranged prior with their doctor.
The injections will be available from noon-5pm and bookings are essential.
