Focus on workplace safety

FIVE workplace deaths in Queensland's south-west in 2010-2011 have prompted a call for local businesses to get involved in Safe Work Week from October 21-27.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said Safe Work Week was a national initiative promoting safe workplaces and the health and wellbeing of employees.

"Safe Work Week 2012 is about reminding everyone of the good things they have waiting for them at home at the end of the working day," he said.

"We want Queensland workplaces to be among the world's safest, and it is critical for businesses to promote safe practices and spread the message.

"Figures show approximately 25 Queenslanders die each year as a result of traumatic workplace incidents, and more than 5000 suffer a permanent injury."

State of Origin coach and rugby league great Mal Meninga is the Safe Work Week Ambassador.

He will address forums in Toowoomba tomorrow.
