Football academy scores special visit from Lions coach

FOOTBALL: The Southern Downs Football Academy is no stranger to state recognition and the growing partnership with the National Premier League is only boosting its performance.

"We practise how we play" were the words of encouragement shared by the NPL's Lions head coach Matt Proctor.

Coaching director Tim Gaske said a session with the Lions coach was a big coup for the Academy.

"We're pretty new on the scene so having someone mentoring us as coaches is pretty awesome as well," Gaske said.

"A lot of us have run similar training sessions to him, but the way he delivers the training really captivates the kids."

It's not the first time that the Academy and the Lions have been linked, with Proctor holding sessions throughout the year.

"Any sort of coaching from a high-level coach the kids really love," he said.

"They all train well for us but giving them that professional exposure at a young age helps them both on and off the field."

The partnership between the Academy and the Lions only continues to grow, with the nationally recognised club providing training sessions in the Southern Downs in 2020.

"We want to give our kids the best opportunity to access different pathways into the sport, and the Lions can help.
