Footy ready to hot up again

THE Barrett Shield footy between Warwick and Wattles means one thing: the rugby league fixture season is about to start.

While Warwick had the upper hand on the scoreboard on Saturday, the Wattles club was competitive in each grade.

It isn't easy to back up after a premiership win and Wattles had a new look A-grade team at the weekend. The fans always make a special effort for the local derby.

Talking local derby, it was Eastern Suburbs and Collegians in junior rugby league on Saturday.

There was no Border Rugby League footy at the weekend.

It was the main day of the Apple and Grape Festival at Stanthorpe and well done to the patrons who received praise from police for generally good behaviour.

The Redbacks made the final of the Cardinal Cup in Aussie rules at Jimboomba - a good start to the season.

Cricket finals action is hotting up with qualifying finals yesterday and two grand finals on Saturday.

The juniors had their cricket finals on Saturday.

As for the future, seems like Carlee Beattie is odds on to make it to the Paralympics in Rio and fingers crossed Matthew Denny will be at the Olympics. He is two metres short in discus five months out.
