Footy star takes mic for junior sports awards on May 2
SPORTS AWARDS: An inside back who played 127 games in the NRL will be guest speaker at the annual Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Year dinner on May 2 at the Hawker Rd Function Centre.
Travis Burns is back living in the Allora area after forging a successful career in the NRL and in Super League in England.
He played his first rugby league in the Texas area before moving with his family to Allora, where he played for Wattles.
Burns played under-18 footy and then one A-grade game before signing with Cronulla to play Jersey Flegg footy.
He played in a Jersey Flegg grand final in an NRL curtain-raiser but Cronulla lost narrowly due to two Jamie Soward field goals.
Burns played NRL for Manly, Cowboys and Penrith before heading to England for more top level footy with Hull Kingston Rovers and St Helens. He played 75 Super League games in England and scored 36 tries and kicked 150 goals and three field goals at NRL/Super League level.
This season, he is back home and playing for the Wynnum Seagulls in Intrust Super Cup footy.
There are 11 monthly winners and most have already been profiled in the Daily News. A presentation will be made to each winner on the night and $500 to the overall winner. The Doc Bodimeade Memorial Encouragement Award will also be presented.
