Forgotten Swan steps up in Tippett's absence

THE last thing Sydney fans wanted to see was Kurt Tippett limping from the field.

Especially after he'd just taken a fine contested mark.

The Swans' forward/ruck has had a rough trot with injuries - and without him, last year's grand finalist looks almost one-dimensional up forward.

It doesn't help when Lance Franklin's having a rough day out.

But all of a sudden, the solution to those forward line woes looks to have emerged.

It's been a long road back to AFL football for Swans tall Sam Reid.

Once a highly-rated young gun signed to a five-year deal based on his immense potential, in recent years, all he's had to his name is that - potential.

But after a strong first-up performance in Round 1, despite Sydney's loss, the injury-prone big man looks primed to make a big impact on the competition - just like the Swans hoped all those years ago.

Against the Bulldogs, Reid took his game to another level.

The 25-year-old looked the most dangerous forward on the ground, booting the game's opening goal.

Then he kicked two more, showcasing his trademark contested marking ability as he snagged three goals in the opening quarter.

He wasn't done there either.

Reid booted a further three goals for the game to finish with a golden half-dozen, with his sixth giving the Swans the lead in the fourth quarter.

His previous best effort was four goals, which he achieved in Round 17, 2014.

That's quite the resurgence.
