Formation of new football academy on the Southern Downs
SPORTSVIEW with Gerard Walsh
THE Southern Downs Football Academy was formed at a meeting this week.
It will have its own identity and work alongside local and regional bodies to boost interest in football in the area.
The academy is currently in discussions about a training facility.
Under the Southern Downs name, organisers are also hoping to attract some new players to the academy from Stanthorpe.
Many of the same people involved in the academy last year under the Warwick Wolves are now involved in the Southern Downs academy.
Last season, the Wolves were one of three sports in Warwick with more than 500 players.
Football is one of the largest junior sports in the area and last season the Wolves won the Toowoomba colts premiership, which shows there is plenty of potential for Wolves teams in men's premier and reserves competitions as well as in women's football.
See more on the football academy later this week.
Girls in the game
IT is good to see girls' leaguetag going up to two age groups in the Warwick and District Junior Rugby League this season.
As cricketer Delissa Kimmince says on today's back page, opportunities are opening up more and more for girls in sport.
Leaguetag could be the start of a rugby league career for some of the girls.
