Former hockey stars still reaping rewards for Olympic gold

JENNY Morris retired after helping the Hockeyroos win gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, but almost 13 years since that 3-1 win over Argentina she and her teammates are still receiving honours for the victory.

The class of 2000 was named as the Australian Women's 'Team of the Century' at the Centenary of Canberra Sportswomen's Ball in the nation's capital on Wednesday night.

They were voted in ahead of the Australian Diamonds (netball) and Matildas (football).

Morris, who played 150 games and scored 86 goals for the Hockeyroos, including one in the final against the South Americans, said she thought the award was a deserving one.

"I don't think there had ever been so much pressure on a team to win gold as we had on our shoulders in Sydney," Morris, speaking from her home in Perth, said yesterday.

"As defending Olympic champions, there was a huge expectation for us to win on our home soil, especially as we had been so dominant on the world stage for so long.

"There was no greater demand on players to deliver than what was placed on us.

"We responded by getting better with each game we played in Sydney, but to be honest, we should have buried Argentina in the first-half in the final given the chances we had."

The win over Argentina meant the Hockeyroos became the first women's team to successfully defend an Olympic title.

Morris is now playing a different sporting role - she has been on the board of the Fremantle Dockers AFL club since 2009.
