Former NRL coach goes for the Maroons again

RUGBY LEAGUE: Phil Economidis is hoping for two major wins within four days.

On Sunday, he won his first event at the Warwick Golf Club after nine runner-up finishes and tonight he is hoping for a State of Origin win by his beloved Maroons.

He knows more than most about preparations for a big game after three years as coach of the Gold Coast Chargers in the NRL competition in the late 1990s.

Right now, his personal sporting focus is golf but he isn't getting carried away with his win in combination with Declan Murphy in the Bush Children's fund raiser on Sunday.

"The kid carried me,” he said referring to one of the best young players in Warwick golf.

But it takes two to win a team event.

Tonight after a day at the Warwick Golf Club, he will be settling down to watch the Maroons.

He seemed a little worried but is backing Queensland and hoping Cameron Munster has a good game on debut at five-eighth.

As for player of the match, it's Billy the Kid, otherwise known as Melbourne fullback Billy Slater.
