Former Test props to clash
ADDING to the program of rugby league legends who will tread the turf of Platz Oval in the March 1clash between the Wattles "Warriors" and a Southern Queensland Police line-up is one of Wattles favourite sons.
Leyburn-raised Shane Webcke will again don the colours of his former Wattles club and take on the might of the police representative outfit that includes former Brisbane Bronco and Penrith Panthers champion prop Petro Civeniciva.
Webcke needs no introduction on the Southern Downs, the local lad who kicked off his league career in the Wattles Junior Rugby League Club's under-8 side, went on to play A-grade for the Wattles senior club before enjoying a glittering 254-match career with the Broncos.
His legendary status was well established after appearing in 21 State of Origins for Queensland and 25 Test matches and four premierships with the Broncos.
While teammates from 1998-2006, the former Broncos bookends will go head-to-head in Wattles' reserve grade pre-season trial against the police outfit.
"I'm keen for the run" said an enthusiastic Webcke, while Civeniciva is "keen to be involved... lucky I haven't thrown my boots out yet!"
When asked if he could find room in the team for "Warhorse" Webcke, Wattles reserve grade coach Glen McMillan replied with a wry grin. "I think we should be able to squeeze him in somewhere," McMillan said.
The team mentor, who will miss playing in Wattles' early season games due to knee surgery, is looking to big Webcke as "the man to get in front of Petro".
The addition of Webcke's name in the program adds significantly to the day that will benefit the Men of League Foundation.
Other matches include Wattles juniors under-13 and 14 sides taking on opponents from Brisbane clubs. Wattles will take on Toowoomba's Southern Suburbs in under-18 and A-grade, Southern Suburbs Reserve Grade clash with Millmerran and Wattles Reserve Grade take on the SQ Police rep line-up.
