Clemesha off to the AIS

TOOWOOMBA netballer Laura Clemesha is well on her way to becoming a superstar.

Clemesha will train with some of the best young netballers in the country when she enters the Australian Institute of Sport netball program next year.

The talented defender is one of 12 AIS scholarship holders for 2012 and the only Queenslander in the group. Clemesha was excited about the chance to move to Canberra and further develop her skills.

"I feel very privileged to have been given such a fantastic opportunity to enter the AIS netball program," she said.

"The access to specialist training and support services, and the opportunity to train under Julie Fitzgerald, will give me every chance to improve my netball."

The former Downlands College student said she hoped the training would be a stepping stone to playing netball at an elite level.

"I will also get a better understanding of what I need to do to continue with netball after my time at the Institute," she said.

"I hope to continue to progress along the Netball Australia Pathway during my time there."

Australia's finest netballers have all progressed through the AIS program since it was established in 1981, including Allora's Laura Geitz, Chelsea Pitman and Amy Steel.

AIS head coach Julie Fitzgerald said the world-class netball program aimed to develop the skills of junior elite athletes and prepare them for the next level.

"The AIS netball program gives players the experience necessary to compete with distinction at both the national and international level," she said. "Our training program at the AIS is based on developing skills and tactics required by Australian teams to compete successfully with our major international competitors.

"I have no doubt that among the current AIS squad there are players who will progress to represent Australia at the senior level."
