Former Warwick West student battle a calf injury in netball

NETBALL: Clare McMeniman will be given to tomorrow to prove her fitness for the Queensland Firebirds game against Southern Steel Edgar Centre, Dunedin, on Saturday.

McMeniman went off in the first quarter of last weekend’s win against Melbourne Vixens with a calf injury, and was replaced by Laura Clemesha.

It is an amazing statistic that two women from the Southern Downs have captained the Australian Diamonds in the past year.

Former Allora student Laura Geitz is the regular Diamonds captain and when she was rested last year selectors chose McMeniman to captain the team in the United Kingdom.

Geitz was most valuable player last weekend in her 150th national league game and will lead the way for the Firebirds across the ditch.

McMeniman started her netball at Warwick West State School and went on to play representative netball at primary school level.

The pair played together for the Canberra Darters in the national league while at the AIS and are now combining well in defence for the Firebirds and Diamonds.

The game in Dunedin this weekend will also be the 100th in charge for Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke.

Geitz captained the Firebirds on a winning run of 21 games at the end of last season and start of this season, which only ended a fortnight ago with a loss to the Swifts.
