Forty years of historics to be celebrated in Warwick
MOTORSPORT: Forty years of historic motor racing in Queensland will be celebrated at Morgan Park Raceway this weekend, with 175 drivers lining up in the Historic Queensland meeting.
The first of 40 annual All Historic Race Meetings, now known as Historic Queensland, was run by MG Car Club (Q) and the Motorcycle Sportsmen of Queensland in November, 1978.
The event has been organised by the Historic Racing Car Club (Qld) since 1993.
The HRCC and the annual Historic Queensland have grown together as both a strong club and highly regarded National Historic Race Meeting.
The club also organises the Autumn Historic Warwick meeting each year and it too is growing in status.
For many years, this weekend's event was the largest non-commercial race meeting in Queensland, with as many as 250 entries some years.
This weekend, there are 175 drivers competing in nine qualifying runs, eighth regularity trials and 27 racing events.
Annual feature races being contested include the HRCC trophy for racing cars, the Queensland Tourist Trophy for sports cars and the Jack Lacey Trophy for touring cars.
The biggest single group of any car will be the Morris Mini Cooper S, with almost 20 entered.
There will be a Mini Celebration Race on Sunday morning at Morgan Park Raceway.
Paul Overell was chief flag marshal at the 1978 event and will be deputy clerk of course this weekend.
Clerk of the course Ian Mayberry said Overell was without doubt one of the backbones of Queensland motorsport and very deserving of the honour of being patron of Historic Queensland 2017.
"He has been a CAMS motorsport official for almost 50 years having commenced as a flag marshal at Lakeside and Surfers Paradise.
"He has officiated at most, if not all, of the Historic Queensland events in between,” he said.
