Forward from the west boosts Warwick pack
RUGBY LEAGUE: Lachlan Palmer has moved from centre for Quilpie to the Warwick Cowboys front row in the past seven months.
He has joined the Cowboys this season after moving to Warwick to take up an apprenticeship with builder Mark Bourke.
Palmer has lived all his life on the family property at Cunnamulla and worked at home last year but had to travel four hours each way to play rugby league with Quilpie as there was no team in his hometown.
In 2015 he was a flanker in the Downlands College First XV in rugby union. He played his first rugby league at Cunnamulla and, during his five years at Downlands, also played junior rugby league for Highfields for two seasons.
At one stage he was playing three games of footy a weekend - school, club rugby league and junior rugby with Bears.
He will come off the bench for the Warwick Cowboys in the clash with Oakey at Oakey tonight.
"Footy has always been a part of my life and I am really enjoying it at the Cowboys,” he said.
"Winning the Barrett Shield is my high point so far. I have been close once or twice to scoring my first try in A grade.”
He has a Warwick connection - his mother, Belinda, is originally from Warwick and his grandfather, Toby Eather, has managed Collegians and Cowboys teams down the years.
A-grade coach Craig Mullaly said Palmer had been going well in his first A-grade season.
"His defence has been sound, Lachlan has been a good recruit and never misses a training run. He is always one of the first at games,” he said.
Mullaly said his side desperately needed a win.
"A win will give us two wins from four games,” he said.
"Mick Bloomfield will improve after playing his first game for the season in the loss to Dalby. I will start Mick in the second row with Jordyn Hogden.”
Centre Joe Fuimaono is out for six weeks with a shoulder injury and Dion Galloway will move to centre.
"I expect Dion will combine well with his brother Dylan at fullback,” Mullaly said.
Back rower Matt Marshall has returned to the team from Coffs Harbour and will play at Oakey if his clearance comes through.
