Hannant to start for Clydesdales

WARWICK-based forward Sam Hannant has been promoted to the starting side for the Toowoomba Clydesdales game against Gold Coast on Saturday in the XXXX Challenge semi at Gatton at 3.30pm.

Toowoomba coach Russell Bailey said yesterday Hannant would be left-side second-rower in place of Cowboys player Luke Brosnan, who is out with injury.

Hannant, of the Brothers club, has been replaced on the bench by 18th man Jan Petrie.

“He is a strong defender and an option for a runner for (five-eighth) Ned Murphy on the edge,” Bailey said.

Warwick half Trent Achilles is the back reserve if anyone withdraws. Bailey said Toowoomba missed Warwick forward Cameron Mulcahy in a loss to Bundaberg in the 47th Battalion Carnival final in Bundaberg.

“We depend a lot on Cameron’s go-forward,” Bailey said.

“Warwick player Scott Kerridge adds a bit of firepower on the wing and scored three tries in the Bundaberg carnival.”

Bailey is confident in his side’s ability to beat Gatton.

“It all depends on our discipline and completing sets,” he said.

XXXX Challenge Draw: Toowoomba v Gold Coast on May 29 at Gatton at 3.30pm; winner to play Townsville in Queensland final on June 5 in Brisbane; Queensland winner v NSW winner in curtain-raiser to June 16 origin at Suncorp Stadium.
