Four in succession for couple in their 80s at golf
GOLF: Age doesn't matter for Warwick couple Ken and Marge Burley, who just keep on winning at the Warwick Golf Club.
Their latest success was in the Lane Cup for mixed handicap matchplay.
The event is held in memory of Jack and Mona Lane and the trophy was presented by their daughter Marg Adcock.
They have now won the cup on four successive occasions after a final victory against Don Warrener and Joely Singleton at the weekend.
This year, Ken has already shot better than his age, 87, off the stick in May when he was aged 88.
The weekend win with his 85-year-old wife Marge was his fifth honour board event of the year.
He has already won the Cunningham Trophy this year, combined with Con Seibel to win the Coe Cup and four ball, best ball handicap matchplay and won the C-grade matchplay.
With most of the honour board events finished for this year, he will finish with five wins, one less than his record six in 2015.
Last year was a quiet year by his standards with just two honour board event wins.
Warwick women's golf president Judy Lester said it was a remarkable effort by the couple to win the Lane Cup for a fourth successive time.
"Ken and Marge are amazing golfers and are a very determined couple when they get out on the golf course,” Lester said.
Each week, they usually play twice in competition and make it three in the week when they support a charity day on a Sunday.
The next major event is the Queensland Seniors Order of Merit on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 11am.
