Four Mustang players have success

FOUR South West Mustangs players have made state teams after the Queensland Rugby League State Junior Championships at Rockhampton.

Brayden Josephs (Oakey) and Tristan Hope (Newtown) made the Queensland under-13 merit team.

South West pair Dwayne Duncan (Souths) and Daniel Nothdurft (Chinchilla) were selected in the Queensland Maroons U16 team which is currently in camp at the Rockhampton Grammar School preparing to play New South Wales Country at Bundaberg on Saturday.

Duncan won the Peter Gray Trophy for U16 player of the carnival. He was Mustangs fullback and played for Goondiwindi and Warwick and District in U13 and U14 age groups before moving to the Souths club in Toowoomba.

The best performance by a Mustangs team was by the U13 side which came fifth in the carnival. South East Kookaburras won the U13 title.

South West started the carnival with a win against Capricornia Capras on Thursday. A Capras player won the Terry Doyle Trophy for U13 player of the carnival.

The Mustangs finished sixth in the U14 age group which was won by the Capras.

One of the best performances by the Mustangs teams in the five-day carnival was a 24-22 U16 loss on Saturday to carnival winners, the Northern Marlins.

South West was ahead 22-18 with three minutes to go but conceded a try not far from centre field which was converted.

A win in the game would have given the U16 team a spot in the final. The Mustangs did secure a competition point for winning the second half after coming back from a 18-6 deficit at halftime.

At the state championships, three points are awarded for winning a match and one point for each half.
